Influence of ridge migration and proximity to hot spots on the morphology of slow- and intermediate-spreading centers

چکیده
[1] Recent observations of ridge bathymetry suggest magmatic segmentation at fastand intermediatespreading centers is linked to the migration of the spreading axis over the mantle. At fastand intermediatespreading centers, Carbotte et al. (2004) observed that leading segments, those that are offset in the direction of ridge migration, are typically shallower (interpreted to be magmatically robust) relative to trailing segments across firstand second-order discontinuities. The model set forth for this correlation invokes asymmetrical mantle upwelling in response to the absolute motion of the ridge axis and the entrainment of melt from across discontinuities. In this investigation, differences in ridge axis depth across firstand second-order discontinuities are examined within the context of absolute plate motions for portions of the slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge (MAR 22–36 N and 25–35 S latitude), intermediatespreading Galápagos Spreading Center (GSC 83–98 W), and intermediate-spreading South East Indian Ridge (SEIR 77–114 E). Portions of each of these areas display chemical and/or physical anomalies resulting from hot spot–ridge interaction. Along non–hot spot–influenced sections of intermediatespreading ridges, leading segments coincide with shallower segments across 72% of the firstand secondorder discontinuities (86% of transform faults and 55% of second-order discontinuities). Depth asymmetries vary with ridge offset length, with maximum asymmetries for ridge offset lengths of 50– 100 km. A weaker correlation is observed between ridge migration direction and ridge morphology at the slow-spreading MAR, where leading segments are shallower across 60% of firstand second-order discontinuities. For hot spot–influenced spreading centers, hot spot proximity dominates ridge morphology at intermediate-spreading centers, but it is not a consistent predictor of axial depth asymmetries at slow-spreading centers. This spreading-rate-dependent influence of ridge migration and hot spot proximity on axial morphology may reflect a more limited entrainment of melt from across slowspreading discontinuities due to the predominance of three-dimensional upwelling and melt focusing to segment centers. Variations in ridge morphology and depth-age relationships on the Pacific-Antarctic ridge
Adjacent segments of the Pacific-Antarctic ridge display significantly different morphologies and depth-age relationships over seafloor younger than 36 Ma. The spreading corridor southwest of Fracture Zone XII is characterized by a rift valley and an usually small subsidence onstant of 226 13 m/m.y. •/2, while the two spreading corridors immediately northeast of Fracture Zone XII have an axial ...
متن کاملEvolution of the Walvis Ridge-Rio Grande Rise Hot Spot System' Implications for African and South American Plate Motions Over Plumes
Crystallization ages of volcanic rocks, dredged or drilled from the Walvis Ridge (ten sites) and the Rio Grande Rise (one site), have been determined by the 40Ar/39Ar incremental heating technique. The fundamentally age-progressive distribution of these basement ages suggests a common hot spot source for volcanism on the island of Tristan da Cunha, along the Walvis Ridge and Rio Grande Rise, an...

متن کاملCarlsberg Ridge and Mid-Atlantic Ridge_ Comparison of slow spreading centre analogues
Eighty per cent of all mid-ocean spreading centres are slow. Using a mixture of global bathymetry data and ship-board multibeam echosounder data, we explore the morphology of global mid-ocean ridges and compare two slow spreading analogues: the Carlsberg Ridge in the north-west Indian Ocean between 571E and 601E, and the Kane to Atlantis super-segment of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge between 211N and ...

Shanderman eclogites are exposed at the west of Shanderman town, Talesh Mountains, in north Iran. Protoliths in these rocks has basaltic composition. Geochemical studies indicate that most of the samples have tholeiitic feature. Mg# versus Cr and Ni show that they experienced olivine and clinopyroxene fractionation. Spider diagram shows more fractionation of olivine compared to clinopyroxene. ...
